Nominated for the Maritime Innovation Award with a groundbreaking innovation on board the Green Pioneer

Published: 06-11-2025

On Monday evening, 3 November, the Maritime Awards Gala took place where we were proudly one of the nominees for the Maritime Innovation Award. It was an inspiring evening with many professionals who are passionate about the maritime sector – and fantastic to be part of it!

Our sincere thanks go out to our team and all involved partners for their dedication, expertise and perseverance. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together. We look back on an evening full of inspiration, connection and energy for the future.

The first ammonia fuel system on board an offshore support vessel

The world’s first ammonia fuel system has been successfully installed on the Green Pioneer, an offshore support vessel owned by our Australian client Fortescue. The system was designed, built, and commissioned following a risk-based design process, in close collaboration with – and with approval from – Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

Thanks to this innovation, the Green Pioneer has received the class notation “ammonia-fueled vessel”: a groundbreaking milestone for sustainable shipping and an important step in the global adoption of ammonia as a maritime fuel.

Added value of the innovation

The ammonia fuel system enables the world’s first ammonia-powered offshore support vessel. The system safely integrates bunkering, storage, conditioning and controlled supply of ammonia with a dual-fuel engine, achieving more than 50% CO₂ reduction. It meets strict safety standards and international regulations and carries the DNV class notation. As such, it provides a safe, efficient and climate-friendly solution and marks a pioneering step in the application and global visibility of ammonia as a sustainable maritime fuel.

Impact on the maritime sector

With this innovation, the following has been achieved:

  • A significant step towards safe, CO₂-neutral and climate-friendly shipping
  • Strengthened international collaboration within the global maritime sector
  • Further development and dissemination of knowledge on sustainable maritime technology
