Methanol Fuel Conditioning Skid for Two Marine Engines

Increasingly stringent environmental regulations in the maritime sector mean that environmentally friendly shipping is now high on every shipowner’s agenda. Sustainability has become an absolute necessity. The transition to alternative fuels is also playing an increasingly important role in the development of marine engines.

We contributed to the further development of methanol as an alternative fuel for marine engines for an international client. As part of this innovative R&D project, we applied our technical expertise to the design and construction of a skid that safely and reliably supplies methanol to the engines.

MFCS Design and Functionality

Our Methanol Fuel Conditioning Skid (MFCS) was designed entirely in accordance with our risk-based design process. This involved carefully identifying the technical requirements and specifications, as well as conducting a comprehensive design risk assessment.

The skid is designed to supply two engines with methanol simultaneously, delivering the required fuel quantity under the specified pressure and temperature conditions. In addition, the system removes potential contaminants from the fuel using a coarse pre-filter and a duplex fine filter.

Safety and Certification

Safety and regulatory compliance are essential when using methanol as a marine fuel. The developed concept has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from classification society DNV.

Thanks to our extensive experience in designing and building fuel piping systems for low-flashpoint fuels, we were able to address the technical and safety challenges of this project in a considered and efficient manner.

Contributing to the Future of Shipping

This project once again demonstrates how we apply our technical knowledge and experience to deliver innovative and more sustainable solutions for the maritime sector. The continued development of methanol-based dual-fuel technology also offers promising opportunities for making the shipping industry more sustainable.
