Last week, Koen Harssema successfully completed his graduation internship. Koen is studying Mechanical Engineering at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen.
During his internship, he conducted research into the technical feasibility of nuclear-powered ships. This study focused on the application of so-called Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which, due to their more compact and modular design, offer opportunities for the maritime sector in the context of sustainability and emission reduction.
Thanks to his efforts, Marine Service Noord has gained a clearer understanding of the current state of the technology, the different types of reactors, and the associated technical challenges and advantages. In addition, the research provides insight into the potential financial benefits and the role nuclear energy could play in the future of shipping.
We congratulate Koen on completing his internship, thank him for his valuable contribution to MSN, and wish him every success in his future career!
