€231 Million in Subsidies for Sustainable Inland Shipping

Published: 14-10-2026

The decarbonisation of inland shipping requires well-considered decisions regarding technology, operations and investments. To support this transition, the Dutch government will make subsidies available from 17 November 2026 for investments in cleaner propulsion systems and the associated charging and refuelling infrastructure. A total of €231.2 million has been allocated to the scheme for the period up to and including 2029.

Subsidies for Various Decarbonisation Solutions

The scheme offers opportunities for both newbuild vessels and the conversion of existing ships. Depending on the project, subsidies may be available for, among other things:

  • Electric propulsion powered by fixed or replaceable batteries.

  • Electric propulsion using hydrogen fuel cells.

  • Hydrogen and methanol technologies for eligible vessels.

  • Hybrid-electric propulsion systems for the conversion of smaller vessels.

  • Charging and refuelling infrastructure required to put these sustainable technologies into practice.

A Strong Subsidy Application Starts with a Technically Feasible Plan

Subsidies are awarded through a tender procedure in which applications are assessed and ranked. Submitting a timely, complete and well-substantiated application is therefore essential. Businesses must demonstrate that their project is technically feasible and that, once completed, the vessel meets the requirements of the subsidy scheme.

A well-substantiated subsidy application starts with a technically feasible plan. That is why we prefer to work closely with the vessel owner and engine supplier from the earliest stages of project planning. By jointly assessing the technical possibilities, the requirements of the subsidy scheme and the practical feasibility from the outset, a realistic plan can be developed that forms the basis for a strong subsidy application.

Specialist Knowledge of Alternative Fuels

Marine Service Noord specialises in newbuild projects and retrofits and has extensive experience with sustainable propulsion solutions, including hydrogen and methanol technologies and hybrid-electric propulsion for smaller vessels.

With the completion of the LNG fuel system for the Sirocco of Chemgas Shipping in 2012, MSN laid the foundation for its knowledge and experience in alternative fuels. This expertise has since expanded to include applications involving methanol, hydrogen and ammonia. The project therefore represents an important milestone in the further development of sustainable fuel systems for inland shipping.

Working Together Towards a Sustainable Future

A successful decarbonisation project starts with making the right technical choices. Marine Service Noord is happy to advise on the possibilities for newbuild projects and retrofits, with a focus on technically feasible and practically viable solutions.
